Review recommends stronger privacy laws
The Albanese Government has released the Attorney-General’s Department’s review of the Privacy Act 1988.
The review concludes the Privacy Act has not kept pace with the changes in the digital world, citing large-scale data breaches, with sensitive personal information being exposed to the risk of identity fraud and scams.
The report says Australian people expect greater protections, transparency and control over their personal information and the release of this report begins the process of delivering on those expectations. The proposals are based on the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) ‘data subject rights’ and include greater transparency, security and controls over consent, regulation of targeted direct marketing and the removal of exemptions for small business.
The Government is now seeking feedback before deciding what further steps to take.
