“there are far far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” – C.S. Lewis
sometimes I work with amazing nonprofits that somehow get stuck in a rut!
it could be a vicious cycle of funding shortfalls, a disengaged board of directors, loss-making programs, no clear strategy, or an inability to communicate their value and impact to funders.
often the board and leaders can’t work out what is holding them back. so the organisation spins its wheels until a (financial) crisis inevitably hits.
a nonprofit health assessment is a high level 360 degree analysis of your operations to help pinpoint areas for improvement. it’s a great tool to facilitate a constructive conversation about where to channel your valuable time and energy.
perhaps a much-loved program is burning cash? maybe the lack of a clear strategy has misaligned your priorities and resources? or the board is simply not pulling its weight?
by articulating and analysing the problem, you have started the journey of fixing it and finding a better way. it may not be easy – meaningful change is never easy – but forging a path forward is also exciting. it provides hope that you are not stuck anymore!
if you want to stabilise your finances, review your business model. if you want to find greater financial sustainability, develop a financing plan. if you want to attract more and bigger funders, develop a case for support. importantly, you must commit to change and put legacy ways of doing things on the table.
